Frequently Asked Questions
Why should organic be my first choice?
Many health issues have been linked to conventional agriculture, including obesity, diabetes and cancer. Healthy choices must be made when purchasing food.
Here are some tips from the Environmental Working Group (EWG).
Buy organic fruits and vegetables whenever possible.
USDA organic labels for meat, poultry eggs, milk and cheese as well butter and honey are recommended.
Avoid processed foods that claim to be "natural" and "no additives."
Always read the ingredient lists. It is possible to add an ingredient during processing if it isn't already listed.
Frozen and canned meats should be preferred to fresh. Frozen and canned foods often contain less nutrient-rich ingredients like high fructose corn syrup.
What should I be looking out for when shopping organic products
USDA-certified organic labels are recommended. This seal signifies that the product meets specific USDA standards. On all packages, boxes and cartons, look for the USDA Organic seal.
When shopping for meat ensure it comes only from cows that are fed 100% organic feed. Ruminants are cattle that chew their cud. Ruminant cattle have four stomach compartments: rumen, reticulum, omasum, and abomasum. To be labeled '100% organic, all animal parts must be organically nourished.
Buy chicken from only organic chickens that have been fed 100% organic food and are not given antibiotics. Omnivore chickens can eat both plants as well as animals. The digestive tract of an omnivorous chicken is composed of a crop and proventriculus, gizzard as well as small intestine, large intestinale, and anus.
Buy dairy products that are 100% organically produced. Dairy cows have four stomach compartments, just like ruminants. The fourth stomach compartment--the cow's udder--is where milk is produced.
To find out the percent of the feed the animals received when you purchase other types livestock, be sure to read the labels. One example is pork that may be labeled '95% Organic'. This means that 95 percent came from organic sources.
Are organic foods better for us?
According to the Environmental Working Group, organic vegetables and fruits had half the amount of pesticides as non-organic. Organic strawberries contained four times more pesticides that their conventional counterparts, and organic apples contained eight percent less.
Other studies suggest that eating organic food reduces exposure to toxic metals like lead and mercury. One study revealed that children who ate organic meat had 33 per cent lower blood lead levels than their counterparts who didn't eat organic meats. Another study concluded that pregnant women should avoid consuming conventional fish due to high levels of mercury.
Organic food appears to be more safe than non-organic. However, to reduce your risk of cancer and other diseases, experts recommend choosing fresh fruit and vegetables whenever possible.
Which organic products are most in demand?
The fastest-growing industry is organic food. Even though we have come a long ways from our roots there is still plenty of room for growth.
Organic products are the future. They are safer, better for our environment, and more affordable for consumers.
They are also generally more expensive. This is why we created the Organic Food Index. We wanted to find out which foods are most popular with shoppers today, and whether these trends are changing.
These findings show that organic foods are becoming more popular. The number of Americans shopping for organic food grew by nearly 50% between 2011 and 2012.
The USDA reported that organic production rose by 10% in the last year. Organic food now accounts for 9% of U.S. agricultural output.
Although organic food is gaining popularity, it appears that consumers still have to pay a premium for it. According to the Organic Trade Association, (OTA), organic food retail prices are nearly twice as expensive than conventional options.
The organic food sector is growing faster than other segments of the food supply. If you look closely at the data, it will be apparent that organic food consumption has steadily increased since 2009.
According to OTA the volume of organic products sold at supermarkets grew by 14% in 2010 and 2011.
This is because consumers are looking for healthier foods. Organic food sales have been increasing in all age groups.
Younger generations are choosing organic food more often than older generations. Millennials are twice as likely than baby boomers to buy organic foods. 25 percent of organic food purchases are made by young adults younger than 35.

How To
What Organic Foods Are You Looking For?
Organic foods are produced from plants and animals that have been grown without the use of pesticides, chemical fertilizers or other additives. They can be produced without the use of genetic engineering or ionizing radiation. No artificial colourings, flavour enhancers, preservatives, or colourings must be used in the food. It must not contain genetically altered organisms (GMOs).
The term "organic" was first used in 1845 when chemist Justus von Liebig coined the word "organisch" meaning life-giving, to describe the properties of manure. Nowadays, most people associate the term organic with the production of food. In this context, organic means that the product contains only naturally occurring substances such as proteins, carbohydrates, fats, and minerals that occur in nature.
In the past decades, the consumption of organic products has grown dramatically worldwide. Recent statistics indicate that approximately half of the world’s population eats at least one organic food per day. This figure is on the rise and it is predicted to grow to 70%, 88%, and 90% in 2020.
Organic products are preferred for many reasons. Organic produce can be preferred for its taste; others prefer them for being healthier. Some people believe organic farming to be more environmentally friendly. However, there are also ethical concerns regarding the treatment of farm workers and animals, which is why some consumers opt for non-organic products.
Organic foods are more expensive than those made from conventional food, though prices may vary by country and region. There are different factors influencing the price of organic food. One factor is whether there are enough land available for organic farming. The cost of inputs and labor required for organic cultivation is another factor. Other factors include transportation costs, marketing costs, and taxes. In Europe, for instance, the average price for organic food in Europe is 10% higher than its regular price.
Here are some key differences between organic and traditional foods.
- Organic produce is free from synthetic fertilizers, growth regulators, hormones, and antibiotics.
- Organic livestock is fed grasses and grains, rather than corn and soya meal.
- Organic milk is produced by cows who eat a diet consisting of pasture grasses and hay.
- All raw materials used in organic manufacturing are certified organic.
- Organic fruits, vegetables and their processing stages are free from pesticides and harmful chemicals.
- Organic meat, poultry, and seafood do not undergo radiation.
- Before using raw nuts or seeds, they must be soaked.
- Only healthy oils are used in organic cooking.
- Organic eggs were laid by hens. They can also be used in outdoor areas.
- Traditional methods are used to extract organic honey.
- Organic chocolate uses beans and sugar that have been organically farmed and processed.
- Organic wines don't contain chemical additives.
- Organic tea leaves come from plants picked by hand.
- Organic cotton can't be treated with any pesticide or herbicide.
- Organic cereals and flours don't contain preservatives or artificial colours.
